Tete de la Sallaz (74), 2026m

Last Sunday Philippe came for the day and we drove into the Alps to a village called Romme (alt: 1310m). This was a really nice village with lots of pretty wooden chalets and excellent views down the Arve valley to the north and to the Col de la Colombiere to the west.

We took our first mountain hike since arriving as 'locals' to the summit of the Tete de la Sallaz, a grassy dome (alt:2026m) with excellent 360 degree views, including grandstand seats of Mont Blanc itself and would you believe a birds eye view of our self storage facility! The walk was challenging but not too steep and follows a piste track through forest all the way to the Chalets de Vormy just below the summit.

It was a bit hazy so the pics are not great, however here they are:

Phil and Vero enjoying the view; Chalets de Vormy

Pointe D'Areu and the Chaine des Aravis; Romme

Spoiling the view; The Arve valley, Tete du Coloney and the Massif de Mont Blanc

Fascinating, especially since I am researching my genealogy and am stuck with Urban Sallaz, my great, great, great, great grandfather was from the area of France near the Swiss border. His son fought in Napoleans army and fled to Switzerland after the defeat. I hope to visit the area in summer 2009. I enjoy your posts, good luck in your new home....sincerely, Jan Sallaz, Ohio, USA
